Snowshoeing Along the Flathead River, Montana

Cold, brisk air beckoned us to play outdoors and the monochrome landscape along the Flathead River became the perfect winter play-land for snowshoeing.

 

 

I know it looks downright cold and you may wonder why anyone would want to go outside in such bleak-looking conditions. My answer to that is: for the experience, to get some exercise, and to get outdoors. It would be awful to think of being cooped up inside all winter long.

Warm clothing is a must if you play outside in winter. It makes the difference between misery and fun. I was bundled up and wearing long johns, with heat warmers in my mittens to keep my hands warm. Even though I hate hat head, I always wear a hat to keep my head warm.

Must have clothing and items for the best experience:

• Waterproof coat
• Waterproof pants
• Waterproof gloves or mittens
• Waterproof boots
• Warm knitted hat
• Thick Socks
• Non-cotton base layer top and bottom
• Heat warmers

 

The trees on the trail along the river dripped with snow, transforming the forest into a magical dreamland. It was simply gorgeous! To never experience any of this because I was unwilling to venture outside in winter would be like refusing to dunk my Oreo in milk because my cookie might break.

Snowshoeing is an excellent way to experience the joys of winter with friends and family. Dress warmly, bring a good attitude and let the magic of winter take you away.

 

 

 

Thinking about buying snowshoes?  Tips before you buy.

Snowshoes can be expensive especially if you have several kids to outfit.  But, once the initial investment is made, they should provide you with many winters of snowshoeing fun. They are less expensive than skis and buying an annual pass to the local ski resort.  Admittedly, they can be a little difficult to put on at first, but with some patience and practice the task becomes easier and the bonus is that you can explore in deep snow.

Attend a Snowshoeing Seminar – If possible, before you buy, attend a snowshoeing seminar. We attended a seminar called, “Identifying Tracks in Winter”. Free seminars are informative and educational, and snowshoes are usually provided free of charge. This provides an opportunity to decide if you are compatible with the sport before purchasing.

Snowshoe Rental – Snowshoe rental is another economical option that I suggest you try before making your decision. Just as in attending a seminar, you can go out and explore for an hour or so to see if you like snowshoeing.

Have the Proper Winter Boots – Pull-on winter boots do not work well with snowshoes. They are likely to slip on the heel making for an unpleasant experience. To avoid an ordeal, waterproof, laced boots are essential for the best snowshoeing adventure.

When You’re Ready to Purchase – Snowshoes are fitted by weight. Therefore, it’s essential to consider the weight of each individual. Bindings are also an important consideration. Bulky winter gloves can make it difficult to fasten snowshoes.  Accordingly, look for easy on and off bindings that older kids can manipulate. Frozen hands are no fun. You want to quickly get the snowshoes on and off.
