The Window at Big Bend National Park

Grizzly Bear Kills Yellowstone Hiker

On Wednesday, a 57 year old man who was hiking with his wife in Yellowstone National Park’s backcountry was killed by a grizzly bear.

Considering that we go hiking in grizzly country ourselves, David remarked that no one had called to ask if he was the victim.

Someone once asked him, “Did you ever notice that it’s only the tourists that get killed by bears?”

We’ve noticed.

David is safe and sound, but that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t done some scary things in National Parks.

I honestly think I could have been widowed in the late 90’s, and M and E left without a father to raise them, when he ignored warning signs in Big Bend to peek over a cliff known as “The Window”.

He’s also walked past “Danger – Slippery Rocks” signs in Glacier National Park and then said how hairy it was to be standing so close to a raging creek.

But I digress.

The unfortunate grizzly bear attack of the hiker in Yellowstone reminded me of a couple of articles from last July, so I decided to post this prior to my posting more on The Hiawatha.

  • Bear Attack at Soda Butte Campground – Camping isn’t for the faint of heart. There is the possibility that you’ll have to do your duty in some vile scented pit toilet, wash your dishes in some potty like contraption, or even get mutilated by a bear.  read more…

Stay safe everyone. Be bear aware and carry your bear spray when hiking in bear country.
