Wes, Sidewalk Art, Running Shoes, and Spring S’mores Bars

Spring has finally sprung. I think. So, what are the signs? Let’s take a look at the ABC’s of spring.

A. We are having a passing snow shower as I write. Passing…being the operative word here.

B. Wes has been looking out the window – a lot. Poor little kitty. He really, really, really wants to go outside.  But he can’t. He poopied in our neighbor’s tomato garden last summer, just like it was a litter box. My neighbor didn’t like Wes relieving himself in his garden and took a pellet gun to him. How could he do such a thing (my neighbor, I mean)? This unfortunate incident has rendered Wes permanently house bound (No worries though, he has fully recovered from his injuries).

If only I could go outside and play with my friends.

C. Some folks are wearing knitted hats and coats, while other ones (mostly under 25) are wearing shorts and T’s.

D. People are raking leaves. The snow caught us early last fall and covered up a lot of leaves that need to be raked up this spring.

E. The heater hardly comes on anymore except for very early the morning. It’s still cold enough for me to wear long johns, though. Who knows, I may be wearing them until June. They sure could use a washin’.

F. Kids are making sidewalk art, including my little gals. I bought them a fresh box of pastel chalks to doodle with, but not before asking them. They were embarrassed (because of their age and all) but I could tell they really wanted them. They satisfied themselves by saying that it was okay to draw on the sidewalk as long as it was artsy…kind of graffiti style.

G. Track is starting up later this month and E got a new pair of running shoes. When GD found out she needed a new pair of running shoes he was determined we buy American. That was no easy task as you can imagine. He searched the internet and came up with New Balance, which still manufactures a line of athletic shoes in America. Problem is, the stores around here don’t stock them, probably because they are more expensive than the Chinese versions. I suppose we could have purchased them online, but E’s toes have been squished in her tennis for awhile, so we settled for a pair of Saucony’s from Indonesia that we bought in Depotland.

H. Parks and Recreation has put up the nets at the tennis courts and stocked the fishing ponds. The ski resorts have closed for the season and the golf courses are now open for business.

Not made in America, except for the kid.

I. One last thing that lets me know that spring has sprung…the wind is blowing mighty hard and kicking up a lot of dust in your face…and making the wind chimes tinkle real pretty.

Here’s the recipe for spring s’mores that you and your family are sure to love.
